5 New Year's Resolutions For A Safer Workplace

Welcome back to work! It’s always hard to get back into the swing of things after the festive period, but why not start the year by making a few positive steps to better workplace health and safety? Changing a couple of things can really make a difference, so here are our five New Year’s Resolutions for work:

  1. Talk to your co-workers

Every workplace and workforce is different, but by understanding the premises and the risks that everyone faces, you can change things to make them better. Explaining rules and regulations as well as starting health and safety conversations encourages everyone to share their concerns and generate ideas as to how improvements can be made.

  2. Start keeping detailed records

Even if you are part of really small organisation (with so few staff that you are not legally required to keep records of risk assessments), having detailed records will help you identify issues and change behaviour before serious damage is caused or someone gets hurt.

  3. Have regular rest breaks and refreshments

Whether you’re working in a physically demanding job on a construction site or in a mentally challenging one behind a desk, it’s important to take regular rest breaks and stay hydrated and well fed. This will allow you to maintain higher levels of concentration, help you stay productive and make better decisions when faced with safety issues.

  4. Protect yourself

It is important to be well prepared for every task that you undertake. Make sure that you are wearing the correct protective clothing, know the right techniques, have the relevant training and have access to all the necessary equipment and support if needed.

  5. Declutter and keep the workplace tidy

This may seem a little mundane, but according to the HSE around 40% of workplace incidents are a direct result of slips or trips. In fact, slips and trips are one of the most common cause of workplace accidents. So cover up the cables, have a good tidy up and where possible move things off the floor to remove unnecessary trip hazards in your work environment.
